In short
Padel shoes use a herringbone or omni-style sole made for artificial turf with sand, plus support for short sideways moves. Clay or all-court tennis shoes are fine for your first sessions; running shoes are not. Buy padel shoes once you play weekly or start slipping when you change direction, and check your club's surface first.

What surfaces is padel played on?
The FIP Rules of Padel allow courts made of cement, synthetic material or artificial grass, as long as the ball bounces regularly. In practice most clubs use artificial turf, and much of it is filled with sand to keep the fibers upright and the bounce consistent. Sand on turf behaves differently from a hard tennis court or clay: it can make your feet slide when you push off sideways, and a sole designed for a hard court can either grip too much in one spot or skate across the sand.
What makes a padel shoe different from a tennis shoe?
The biggest difference is the outsole. Padel shoes from the major racket brands usually use a herringbone or omni-style tread designed to bite into sand-filled turf while still letting the foot pivot. Hard-court tennis shoes often have a flatter, more abrasion-resistant sole, and clay-court tennis shoes use a deep herringbone that can work on sandy turf. The second difference is the upper: padel involves short, sharp lateral movements and quick stops at the glass, so padel shoes emphasize side support and a stable heel.
| Feature | Padel shoe | Hard-court tennis shoe | Clay-court tennis shoe |
|---|---|---|---|
| Outsole pattern | Herringbone or omni-style tread for turf and sand | Flatter tread for abrasion resistance | Deep herringbone for sliding on clay |
| Grip on sandy turf | Designed for it | Often slippery or uneven | Usually workable |
| Lateral support | Emphasized for short side-to-side moves | Strong, built for longer lateral runs | Strong |
| When it makes sense | Regular play on turf courts | Cement or hard padel courts | An occasional session if it is what you own |
When are tennis shoes fine for padel?
For your first few sessions, a pair of clay-court or all-court tennis shoes is usually fine, and it is far better than running shoes. Running shoes have soft, high cushioning and little lateral support, which makes rolled ankles more likely during quick side steps. If your club plays on a hard or cement surface rather than turf, hard-court tennis shoes may suit it better than a turf-specific padel shoe. Check the surface before you buy.
When should you buy padel-specific shoes?
Buy padel shoes once you play every week or start to notice slipping when you change direction. Signs that your current shoes are wrong for the court include sliding on push-offs, feeling stuck when you try to pivot, or soles wearing smooth at the ball of the foot within weeks. Replace padel shoes when the tread pattern wears flat in the forefoot, because grip on sand drops quickly once the edges are gone.
How do you make padel shoes last?
Knock sand out of the soles after every session, let shoes dry away from direct heat and keep a separate pair for the court rather than wearing them on the street, where concrete wears the tread down quickly.
How should padel shoes fit?
Fit them for lateral movement, not just straight-line comfort. Your heel should not lift when you lunge sideways, there should be a thumb's width of room at the toe, and your foot should not slide over the edge of the sole when you push off. Try them with the socks you play in and, if you can, move side to side in the shop before buying.
Which padel shoes are on the market, and how do they compare?
This table lists current padel shoes from the brands in Valor's gear database with their published outsole pattern and fit. A herringbone or clay sole suits the sandy artificial turf on most padel courts; omni soles suit firmer, less sandy courts. See every model on the padel shoes page.

Common questions
Can you play padel in tennis shoes?
Yes, especially at first. Clay or all-court tennis shoes work reasonably on sandy turf. Avoid running shoes, which lack lateral support.
What sole is best for padel?
Most padel shoes use a herringbone or omni-style tread designed for artificial turf with sand. Check what surface your club uses before choosing.
Are padel shoes worth it for beginners?
Not on day one. Buy them once you play regularly or notice slipping or sticking when you change direction.
Can I wear running shoes for padel?
It is not recommended. Running shoes have soft cushioning and little side support, which raises the risk of rolling an ankle on quick lateral steps.
How often should padel shoes be replaced?
When the tread in the forefoot wears flat or you start slipping. Players who play several times a week usually notice this sooner than occasional players.
