Padel bags: what you need

You do not need a padel bag on day one. Once you play regularly, here is which type fits how you travel and what belongs inside.

In short

Most club players need either a backpack with a racket compartment or a thermal racket bag that holds two rackets, shoes and balls. Choose a racket pocket sized for padel, a separate shoe compartment and some insulation if your racket sits in a car. Beginners can start with a simple racket cover.

Do you need a padel bag?

Not on day one. A racket cover and any sports bag will do for the first few sessions. A dedicated padel bag becomes worth it once you play regularly and carry a racket, spare grips, shoes, balls and water every time. The main thing a padel bag adds is protection for the racket: a padded or insulated compartment that keeps the frame from getting knocked and keeps the foam core away from extreme heat, which can change how a racket feels.

Which type of padel bag should you choose?

What features actually matter?

  • A racket compartment sized for padel. Padel rackets can be up to 45.5 cm long under the FIP Rules of Padel; a pocket designed for a tennis racket wastes space, and a small backpack pocket may not close over the handle.
  • Thermal lining. Useful if your racket sits in a car or in direct sun before matches.
  • A separate shoe compartment. Keeps sand and dirt from the court away from your clothes and grips.
  • A small valuables pocket. For keys, phone, spare overgrips and the wrist cord if it is detachable.
  • A ventilated wet pocket. Handy for sweaty clothes after evening matches.

What should you keep in your padel bag?

A sensible everyday kit is short: your racket with its wrist cord attached, a spare racket if you have one, two or three overgrips, a can of padel balls, court shoes, a towel, water and a light layer for indoor courts with air conditioning. Add protective tape for the frame if you play near the walls a lot, and a small first-aid kit with blister plasters if you play long sessions. Our accessories guide explains which extras are worth buying.

How should you pack for a tournament or a trip?

Carry two rackets if you have them, with fresh overgrips already applied, and a spare wrist cord. Pack two pairs of socks, a change of clothes, unopened cans of balls if the event does not supply them, snacks and more water than you expect to need between matches. If you fly, carry rackets in the cabin where possible rather than checking them, and keep them in a padded compartment away from hard items.

How do you keep rackets in good shape between matches?

Do not leave rackets in a hot car or in direct sun for long; foam cores and resins are sensitive to heat. Store the racket in its cover, wipe off sand after outdoor sessions, and replace the overgrip when it turns slick. If you use frame protection tape, check it for peeling edges, because a damaged edge is easier to spot early than a cracked frame.

Which padel bags are on the market, and how do they compare?

The table compares the padel racket bags and backpacks in Valor's gear database by racket capacity, thermal compartment and shoe compartment, as each brand publishes them. A thermal compartment matters most if your rackets sit in a hot car. The full list is on the padel bags page.

Common questions

What size padel bag do I need?

If you carry one racket and shoes, a backpack with a racket compartment is enough. If you carry two rackets, clothes and balls, a full racket bag is easier.

Is a thermal padel bag worth it?

If your racket sits in a car or the sun before matches, yes. Heat can change how the foam core feels over time.

Will a tennis bag work for padel?

Usually yes, though the racket pockets are longer than a padel racket needs. Check that it protects the racket and has room for shoes.

Should I carry a spare padel racket?

Competitive players often do, in case of a crack or a broken wrist cord. Most club players can manage with one racket and a spare overgrip.

How do I stop sand getting into my bag?

Use a separate shoe compartment or a shoe bag, and knock sand out of shoes and the racket before packing them.
