In short
The essentials are a wrist cord (required by the FIP rules, non-elastic and at most 35 cm), court shoes for your club's surface, proper padel balls and overgrips. Frame protection tape is worth it for most players. Skip gadgets that promise power or spin; those come from technique and timing.
Updated
Which padel accessories are actually essential?
Only a few. The rules make one of them mandatory: the FIP Rules of Padel require a non-elastic cord, no longer than 35 cm, fixed to the handle and worn around the wrist. Almost every racket ships with one; check it is intact before you play. Beyond that, the essentials are court shoes suited to your club's surface, padel balls that meet the official specification and overgrips to keep the handle tacky and the thickness right for your hand.
| Accessory | Priority | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Wrist cord | Required by the rules | Must be non-elastic, at most 35 cm, worn around the wrist |
| Court shoes | Essential | Grip and lateral support on turf; see the shoes guide |
| Padel balls | Essential | Slightly smaller than tennis balls, with their own bounce spec |
| Overgrips | Essential for regular players | Tack, sweat control and handle thickness |
| Frame protection tape | Useful | Protects the frame edge from wall and floor scrapes |
| Racket bag or cover | Useful | Protects the racket from knocks and heat |
| Vibration or comfort add-ons | Optional | Effects are claimed by brands rather than measured |
How many overgrips should you use?
Use as many as it takes to get the handle thickness right. Your fingers should just reach around the handle without squeezing. Many players use one or two overgrips; players with larger hands sometimes build up more. Replace overgrips when they turn smooth or shiny, because a slick handle makes you grip harder, which tires the forearm. A thicker, tacky handle that lets you hold the racket loosely is one of the cheapest comfort upgrades in padel.
Is frame protection tape worth it?
For most players, yes. Padel rackets frequently scrape the walls and the floor during defense, and the frame edge is where chips and cracks start. The FIP rules allow objects on the racket that limit deterioration or vibration, provided they are reasonable in size and position. Tape adds a few grams to the head, so expect the racket to feel very slightly more head-heavy; reapply it when the edges lift.
What can you skip?
Skip anything that promises more power or spin by itself. Spin comes from preparation and contact, and power from timing and position. Be cautious with heavy add-ons that change balance significantly, and with large vibration devices; the rules require additions to be reasonable in size and not distracting. Gadgets are better bought after you know which problem you are trying to solve.
Do you need padel-specific clothing?
No. Any breathable athletic clothing works, the same as for tennis. Choose fabrics that dry quickly for outdoor summer play, a light layer for air-conditioned indoor clubs, and socks that cushion lateral movement. A cap or visor helps on sunny outdoor courts. Some clubs have dress guidelines, so check before your first visit, but none of this requires gear marketed specifically for padel.
What makes a good gift for a padel player?
Consumables are the safest gifts: a box of padel balls, a multipack of overgrips or frame protection tape. They get used up, and nobody minds having more. Rackets and shoes are personal choices that depend on level, playing style and foot shape, so a gift card or a voucher for a racket demo or lessons at a local club is usually a better bet. Which overgrips and frame protectors compare best on paper?
This table lists the overgrips, replacement grips and frame protectors in Valor's gear database with their published type, pack size and thickness. Thin overgrips keep the handle feel close to the racket; thicker replacement grips add cushioning and handle size. See the accessories page for profiles.

Common questions
Is the wrist strap mandatory in padel?
Yes. The FIP rules require a non-elastic cord of at most 35 cm fixed to the handle and worn around the wrist.
What is the best accessory for a beginner?
A few overgrips and a can of proper padel balls. They make the biggest difference for the least money.
Does protective tape change how a racket plays?
Slightly. It adds a few grams at the head, which can make the racket feel a little more head-heavy. Most players do not notice after a session or two.
Are padel dampeners allowed?
The rules allow objects that limit deterioration or vibration if they are reasonable in size and position and do not distract other players.
How often should you change your overgrip?
When it turns smooth, shiny or wet-feeling. Frequent players often change it every few sessions.
